Environmental Footprint

Operating safely and efficiently minimizes our environmental footprint and reduces risk to our business and our stakeholders.  Managing our environmental impact is part of our overall Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability strategy.

Environmental Footprint

Overview

Operating safely and efficiently minimizes our environmental footprint and reduces risk to our business and our stakeholders. Nordson Corporation’s global presence requires us to be sensitive to how our operations impact the environment and the communities where we operate. At this early stage in our sustainability journey, we do not have baseline data on our environmental impacts. In the future, we’ll look to establish baseline data in energy use and other footprint areas. We expect to improve our capability for collecting and analyzing this data from our facilities. Once we have the baseline data and the proper data collection systems in place, we intend to set goals and annually report our progress to our stakeholders.

Operating Efficiently and Minimizing Our Impact

Operating efficiently across our business enables us to be more cost-competitive, increase productivity and minimize our impact on the environment. Currently, we do not have specific environmental initiatives in place across our operations, but our commitment to operating in a lean manner minimizes our environmental footprint. Specifically, our commitments to Lean Six Sigma and Continuous Improvement enhance our operations in a manner that effectively limits energy use and reduces waste throughout our business. In turn, these practices also lower our carbon footprint. Additionally, as we design products and manufacturing processes, we seek opportunities to reduce our products’ environmental impact. Wherever possible, we design our products to have fewer components, longer lifecycles and to use less energy.

We have accountability systems in place to monitor and minimize our environmental impact. In 2014, we added environmental team support to our Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) program, which incorporates environmental policies, procedures, instructions and records in addition to safety protocols. Learn more about our EHSS on our Workplace Health & Safety page.

Additionally, we require all U.S. facilities to comply with Clean Air Regulations through Air Source approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure that contaminants are properly removed from our air emissions. Our Corporate Safety Department is responsible for maintaining our waste profile, and Responsible Managers follow proper disposal processes. These Managers also ensure all employees are trained in the disposal of certain materials. Our Environmental Engineers track and ensure proper facility storage and disposal of hazardous waste, acting in alignment with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

Environmentally Friendly Products

Ingrained within Nordson’s customer value proposition is the design and manufacture of products that reduce energy use, reduce waste, enhance throughput and reduce material (paints, adhesives, sealants, etc.) consumption. Recent examples of these products include:

Mini Blue II
MiniBlue II Adhesive Applicators - Plastic insulating covers reduce energy use up to 38%.  Adhesive “stitching” technology reduces adhesive consumption by up to 50%.

SureBead Adhesive Applicators
- Sharp cutoff technology reduces adhesive use up to 50%.

EcoBead™ Pattern Generator -  Enables easy, economical transition to intermittent adhesive dispensing and material savings. Users can easily select from 40, individual, pre-programmed glue- saving profiles.

CrystallCut Pelletizing Systems - Provides substantial energy savings in comparison with standard PET polymerization systems by using the thermal energy of the molten polymer in PET pelletizing for subsequent crystallization.

LEEDLEED Silver Headquarters

In 2010, we built our current 28,000 square-foot global headquarters in Westlake, Ohio. It was awarded the LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2012. The building protects open space, reduces light pollution, water use and construction waste, as well as optimizes natural lighting, views and energy use, and more. For more information, read our Corporate Headquarters page.

In honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day, the Paperboard Packaging Council,
of which Nordson Corporation is an associate member, offers programming that teaches children about the "natural renewability and sustainability of paperboard packaging." Multiple Nordson locations participate annually in the educational outreach program called Trees into Cartons, Cartons into Trees (TICCIT).

Energy saving awardEnergy Saving Award from Japan Packaging Machinery Manufacturer’s Association

In 2015, Nordson was honored with two Japan Pack Awards for Outstanding Performance and Energy Saving at the Japan International Packaging Machinery show. A committee from the Japan Packaging Manufacturer’s Association selected from a field of over 40 companies to honor those with outstanding products and technologies. Nordson received both awards for its Freedom® Hot Melt Adhesive Dispensing System, which features innovative, tankless auto-fill technology, energy-efficient MiniBlue® II applicators and a distinctive vertical-mounting design.
